DirecTV is launching a dedicated 3D HD channel

HD Guru reports that DirecTV will launch a dedicated, 3D HD channel sometime after March 2010. Claiming unnamed inside sources, the report indicates that DirecTV will make an official announcement at CES 2010 in Las Vegas on January 7th. Although the technical specs were not provided, HD Guru said that DirecTV just launched the satellite last night that will be responsible for adding the dedicated 3D HD channel along with a few additional HD channels.

Sources also indicate that the new channel will meet the new 3D standards set by the major TV manufacturers. What’s not known is what will actually be provided on the channel: HD Guru said it will be movies, sports, and programs in 3D (which is really a given anyway), but wasn’t able to provide greater details.

Current DirecTV HDTV subscribers will eventually receive a firmware update when the new satellite kicks into operation. This will enable the HDTV boxes to receive the HD 3D programming, which in turn will be compatible with the new 3D HDTVs coming in 2010 by LG, Samsung, Panasonic, and more. HD Guru also added that DirecTV’s 3D HD channel will be compatible with existing Mitsubishi DLP models and the upcoming 3D converter box.

Naturally, consumers will need a 3D HDTV and 3D glasses to watch DirectTV’s new channel when it launches after March 2010. We’re also betting other companies will be jumping onto the 3D-dedicated-channel bandwagon such as Time Warner and Comcast. Wait until next month… you’ll see.
